The Deep Love Of Jesus - Free Essay Example

In the early 1800s, there was a young man named George Mueller who lived in Germany. George grew up as a rather rebellious kid who caused his parents constant concern. George went to college where he was well known for making fun of Christians. One day, a friend invited him to a Bible study, and he reluctantly went. Much to his surprise, he actually enjoyed it and was amazed when he saw people who actually knew and loved God. This was a nightly Bible study, and he showed up each evening that week. Within a few days, he knelt at his bed and asked Jesus to forgive his sins. There was a pretty incredible transformation in George he replaced his former habits with things like reading the Bible, going to church, and sharing the story of Gods love for people. George felt a call to be a missionary, but his father was incredibly disappointed. He withdrew his support of Georges college education. So George prayed. Within the hour, George received a note from a professor offering him a paid tutoring job. George graduated and headed off to England to serve as a missionary. At that time, there were an incredible number of orphans, so he decided to do something about it. He opened up an orphanage that cared for the children and he loved them with the love of Jesus. He ministered to what was considered at that time the lowest class of society. George spent a great deal of time in prayer asking the Lord to provide for the needs of the children. And God provided. He raised money to start 117 Christian schools throughout England that educated over 120,000 children. His orphanage served over 10,000 children over his lifetime. There is a famous story from one day early in Georges ministry. The children are dressed and ready for school. But there is no food for them to eat, the housemother of the orphanage informed George. He asked her to take the 300 children into the dining room and have them sit at the tables. He thanked God for the food and waited. George knew God would provide food for the children as he always did. Within minutes, a baker knocked on the door. Mr. Mueller, he said, last night I could not sleep. Somehow I knew that you would need bread this morning. I got up and baked three batches for you. I will bring it in. Soon, there was another knock at the door. It was the milkman. His cart had broken down in front of the orphanage. The milk would spoil by the time the wheel was fixed. He asked George if he could use some free milk. George smiled as the milkman brought in ten large cans of milk. It was just enough for the 300 thirsty children. George was an unlikely Christian. But arent we all unlikely Christians, who have somehow encountered Gods love? We can trust that God will provide for his children because he loves us. Our reading from 1 Kings and John tell stories of how God miraculously provided food. Bread was one of the basic essentials of life. If you had bread, you could survive. It was the symbol of Gods provision. When Jesus was at the Last Supper, he took bread and broke it and said this is my body, given for you. It became a symbol of Gods love, of the sacrifice of Jesus which once and for all demonstrated to the world how much God loves all people. As often as you eat it, do this in remembrance of me. We often take that line that Jesus spoke and apply it to the celebration of Communion where we reenact the Last Supper. But Jesus didnt only mean remember me when you come to Communion. He meant remember me every time you eat, because the very food you eat is a reminder of my love for you. That love is the love that led Jesus to the cross. Through his death we have access to Gods grace and forgiveness. Because of this love, we have hope that when we die, we will spend eternity in heaven with God. All we need to do is believe! Gods love is something that is so big, so powerful that it is hard to grasp. In our text from Ephesians we see that Paul prays that we might have the power to comprehend how wide, and high, and deep, and long Gods love for us is (Ephesians 3:18). It takes the very power of God to understand his love and what that means for us as a people. Paul says that the church is meant to be a place where Gods love is known. When people walk through our doors, they should meet with Gods all consuming, never-ending, reckless love. We can experience this love through the work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts and through the welcome that we extend to one another. In our text from Ephesians, we get an insight into Pauls prayer life. Paul was the epitome of someone who labored for Christ. He planted some 20 churches while going on four major missionary journeys. He preached countless times and witnessed thousands of people come to faith. He faithfully stewarded these churches, providing correction and guidance when necessary. Like I mentioned last week, the church at Ephesus was pretty healthy, but Paul wanted them to grow deeper in their understanding of Gods love. His prayer is twofold: he prays that they will be strengthened in the Spirit and have power, and he prays that Christ will dwell in their hearts. These two things, power from the Spirit and Christ in us are at the center of Christian maturity, and Paul says they are a result of being rooted and grounded in love. Christ and faith in Christ is the first block of our foundation, but receiving Gods love is what keeps us on that foundation. Paul writes that we should be rooted in Gods love. The word rooted is a gardening term. What does it mean for a plant to have good roots? The root system provides nutrients for the plant. They absorb minerals and nutrients, but they also provide stability. There are some plants that have poor root systems, and they produce poor fruit and they easily topple in storms. Here in West Virginia, it is common after a spring thunderstorm or winter snowstorm to go out and find trees blocking the road. They often look like this: Different trees and plants have different types of roots. The silver maple tree has one of the most impressive root systems. There is a popular picture of a silver maple that did not get washed away during a major flood. While the waters washed away the soil, this root system went deep and strong and the tree remained in place. Paul wanted the Christians at Ephesus to have their faith deeply rooted in Gods love. When we face difficult times, tragedies, sorrow, we dont need empty words of comfort. We need Gods love. We need to know that despite the raging storms that might surround us, God is there. He is with us. He cares. He loves. Having strong roots in Gods love also sustains us to produce good fruit. We are called to walk through life being different from the world. Christians should be known by producing the fruits of the spirit. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, goodness, and self-control. No matter how hard we try on our own, we cannot simple muster up these fruits, we cannot force them. They are naturally produced when we are rooted in Gods love for us. Accepting love can be an incredibly difficult thing at times. When we are hurt by a friendship, a parent, a romantic relationship, it does something to our heart. It kind of tarnishes our perception and thus our ability to receive love. When our relationships are cruel or seem to demand an impossible perfection, it is quite natural to use these broken perceptions of love and to apply them to how we view Gods love for us. Ive done this myself I am quite a perfectionist naturally. Throughout my education, relationships, and even in my preaching, I expect to be perfect. But perfect, isnt really possible. I did a great deal of soul searching, trying to discover where this compulsion to be perfect came from, and I discovered that I thought that I was able to earn love based on what I did. This is an incredibly easy thing to do because many people will reward achievement and ridicule failure. But we cant apply this view of love to God. Gods love is never dependent upon how I perform, because God knows Ill never be perfect. Gods love isnt even dependent on whether or not I sin. Gods love is still there. Now when I sin, his love corrects and calls me to repent, but the deep love of God never leaves. God knew full well that we werent perfect thats why he sent Jesus to live the perfect life and be the perfect sacrifice so that we could have access to Gods love. Relationship with God means living with Christ in us, with the full benefits of being Gods children. If we believe in Jesus and show up to church, but we dont seek to be deeply rooted in Gods love, its like living our lives at half-throttle. Once there was a backhoe operator on a construction site who surprised one day by the owner of the company. Being relatively new to his job, the operator was exercising care in his manipulation of the machine. Suddenly the motor, which had been set at half-throttle, roared to life. The startled operator looked behind him to discover that the owner was holding the lever wide open. Shouting above the engine noise, the owner explained to the puzzled operator, ?This is the way I want to hear my equipment run. The owner knew the potential of his equipment, and he wanted the full benefit. The same is true with God concerning His children. Being deeply rooted in Gods love and accepting our identity as Gods children revolutionizes our lives. It enables us to love our neighbors. It gives us patience with difficult people. It helps us live free from the sins that hold us back. It restores our relationships and helps us have the ability to be our best. When we open our hearts and receive Gods love, it necessarily changes us. The rules arent what change us. The showing up to church isnt what changes us. Its the relationship with God and the abiding in his love that changes our lives. The relationship changes the very disposition of our hearts and then and only then can we begin to fulfill the command to love God and our neighbor. We are enabled to walk in holiness not through striving and human perfection, but through divine action. Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus that given to us. May we be rooted in Gods love, may we have the Holy Spirits power to understand the love, and may we have the courage to abide in Gods love. One of the great keys to staying in love with God is to come to this Table of Grace and receive the elements of Communion. In this we commune not only with each other, but with God himself. He meets us at this altar and we receive his love. Not through our worthiness but through our faith in Christs worthiness. Come expecting an encounter with God through the power of the Holy Spirit. Thanks be to God, Amen.

Interpersonal Communication in Disney Pixar’s ‘Up’ Essay

Communication is everywhere. We, as interactive human beings, spend the majority of our time corresponding with others to satisfy our physical, identity, social, and practical needs (Adler, Rodman, Sevigny, 2011). Often, this is consciously done; we search our minds for the accurate linguistic means to express our experiences, and use them to communicate with those around us. However, communication is not as straightforward and effortless as we may believe. It is, in fact, often unintentional, with 65% of it occurring as a result of non-verbal cues (Matsumoto, Shibata, Seiji, Mori, Shioe, 2010). As mentioned by Marta Dynel (2011) in a study done on nonverbal communication, â€Å"Non verbal signs and signals ... are prevalent practically in†¦show more content†¦This idea is portrayed very often in the scene from ‘Up’. One specific example is seen when the male character, Carl, is watching his wife, Ellie, paint their mailbox. He is staring at her intently with a grin on his face, his eyes appearing to be soft. One could interpret this as an expression of interest and affection – Ellie clearly does, as she looks up at him in return and smiles. Another example occurs when Ellie visits Carl in the hospital after he has broken his leg. She glances at him out of the corner of her eye, with a slight smirk on her face. This is one example where there exists an issue of intentionality, as often is present when it comes to nonverbal communication (Hall, Carter, Horgan, 2000). An observer who is unaware of the couple’s relationship and the circumstances surrounding the situation may mistake Ellie’s glance as a sign of annoyance, however those with more knowledge on the setting can realize that the smirk expresses the thought â€Å"Well, we both know what this means...†. Therefore, this particular scene does an excellent job of demonstrating the ambiguity and complexity of countenance in nonverbal communication. Art Review A Review Of The Boys Are Back In Town At The Romo Gallery Essay Example For Students

Art Review: A Review Of The Boys Are Back In Town At The Romo Gallery Essay The Boys are Back in Town, The Romo Gallery (February 22 April 12, 2008) The group show presents a series of recent paintings by ten talented young artists living and working in close proximity in the enclaves of Brooklyn. The group of artists include John Brainard, Jamison Brosseau, John Copeland, Joseph Hart, Wes Lang, Eddie Martinez, Brian Montuori, Russell Nachman, Ryan Schneider, and Brett Wilson. The main theme of the exhibit was to feature contemporary abstract artworks focusing on present social order and politics. The featured art works of Paul Brainard at the exhibition were mostly abstract epresentations of contemporary elements and events. Many of his artworks features contents such as politics, religion, media, and to large extent the female pornography. This first painting, is titled, The President of the United States of America, 2008. This was done using oil on Linen, and its size is 55 x 40 inches. This composition is a very stylized representation of his view women in society. The emphasis of the painting is a large scaled stripping prostitute front and center in piece. In the background, we see a smaller painting of a portrait of popular icon, politician and first lady Hillary Clinton. Other distinct images include two skulls seen around the prostitute. The rest of the painting is filled with a variety of subordinate and oddly random shapes and objects. Another piece is a drawing done by Brainiard follows on the same theme of politics and social order. This piece is titled, Decision 08 done by Paul Brainard in 2007. This was done using graphite on paper, sized 22 X 30 inches. This drawing bears striking resemblance to the painting seen before. Again there is a prostitute positioned as the emphasis and the subject of the piece, with a smaller portrait of politician Hillary Clinton in the top left corner of the composition. The skull is also recurrent, this time, drawn translucently over the naked prostitute. There also a similar array of random letters, numbers and shapes. New images include junk foods and snacks, being a doritos bag and a box of donuts. Comparing both of Brainard pieces, some consistent elements come out. Both had prostitutes as the subject matter, although the titles make implicit references to Hillary Clinton. Both had small portraits of Clinton and an ever recurring skull. Just by looking at these similarities, one could imply that the artist is trying to paradox the possibility of a first female resident in a society where women are commonly viewed as sexual objects. The repeating image of skull could imply death, fear, sin or corruption. This may be referring to the decay of the morals of society or the dying society we live in. The random and confusing backgrounds of both pieces may imply a dysfunctional society. He may also be exposing the blur between perception and reality that seems to make this society dysfunctional. The next artist, I would like to feature is Eddie Martinez. Martinez is another contemporary abstract artist who focus on the everyday social life of us human beings. Most of his works at the exhibit contains a random array of everyday objects that seemingly characterize the way humans behave. His works have a consistent element of confusion and simplicity. This first piece is titled, Risky Business, done in 2008. He used a mixed array of media on canvas, which was 40 X 30 inches. This painting features a stylized representation of random array of objects on a round table. He uses a collage of objects that can all be connected to gambling; these items include sunglasses, liquor,a pair of die, a few playing cards, a knife and a Champaign glass. The paint is applied thickly, creating rough textures in some areas. .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122 , .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122 .postImageUrl , .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122 , .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122:hover , .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122:visited , .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122:active { border:0!important; } .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122:active , .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122 .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2d31cf2fe5dd82239100af6988909122:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Arts And Crafts Essay IntroductionThe positioning of the objects resemble ancient Egyptian style hieroglyphics where the objects that are supposed to be closer to viewer appear lower in the painting. The background is a dark black, with visible paint strokes. The only seemingly out of place object in the painting is the Smurf character who appears on top of a bottle holding a cup of beer. The Smurf appears to be very happy and possibly drunk. The exact meaning of this character is unclear but it throws the meaning of the peace into a state of confusion.

International Institutions Role in Prevention of War

Introduction This assignment is a discussion on the topic of international institutions’ role in prevention of war. The discussion is based on question four â€Å"Major war will not occur in the future because the international community has created a set of international institutions that make it impossible â€Å".Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on International Institutions’ Role in Prevention of War specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Some of the institutions and concepts that have been developed by the international community to avert a major war in the future include the United Nations (UN), pursuit of global justice, the concept of globalization, idealism, liberalism, constructivism, international law and the universal declarations of human rights. Discussion United Nations and Prevention of War The UN is an international organization which brings member states together in a cooperation to achieve economic, social and political progress as well as respect for human rights through adherence to internal law. The UN is also concerned with maintenance of peace in the world. The UN was formed in 1945 after the Second World War, to replace its predecessor, the League of Nations, which was unable to prevent the Second World War. The UN was therefore formed with the main objective of preventing wars between states through negotiations, dialogue and sometimes military force. The current UN secretary general is Ban Ki- Moon from South Korea. The UN is governed by what is referred to as the UN charter. The charter contains various provisions and guidelines regarding economy, politics, human rights, international law and justice system. The Security Council is the organ of UN which deals with issues of maintenance of peace and prevention of wars in the world. It ensures that any threat to peace is identified as early as possible, so that the international community may interve ne to bring dialogue between the conflicting parties. Once there is a war, the UN deploys its troops in the affected nation(s), as the last option to restore peace. The UN also focuses on the factors which may compromise peace within a country or between nations. For instance, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) was formed mainly to promote development in poor countries, with the philosophy that poverty and lack of development are potential sources of ethnic or political violence within a nation or between nations. Other organizations affiliated to the UN are the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). All these institutions and programs are aimed at empowering people with education and the civilization needed to respect each other as well as to take care of the environment.Advertising Looking for research paper on international relations? Any government which violates these rights may be subjected to international law and international justice system, based on the Rome statute which forms the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICC is mandated with dealing with cases of genocide or massive abuse of human rights. Examples of some trials which have taken place in the court are the cases for former Yugoslavia, Rwanda and Liberia. The international law and the ICC therefore act as a check against acts of aggression or mass atrocities within nation(s). UN also addresses the issue of smuggling of firearms, which may result to armed conflict within a nation or between nations. Countries which violate the UN charter or those which do not promote disarmament may be slapped with economic sanctions. Pursuit of Global Jus tice This is a politically derived philosophy which is formed on the assumption that the world is generally unjust and unfair. What this means is that the world is full of biases when it comes to matters of justice in the distribution of power, economic resources and opportunities. Generally, the injustice is fuelled by the politics of domination between nations of the world whereby the rich deny the poor justice in various sectors. In terms of social relationships, the rich people are known to manipulate the process of justice in their favor thus making the poor unable to get justice because they cannot afford to purchase it. The pursuance of global justice by the international community has ensured that nations of the world are treated with the respect they deserve. Nations also are able to resolve disagreements through international law and institutions. The Concept of Globalization Globalization can be defined as the minimization of the differences between people of the world an d the maximization of their similarities through interactions, cooperation and communication. During the pre-world war period, the world was characterized by minimal interaction, communication, cross-border movements and language homogeneity. However, after the world war, this situation changed. The changes were mainly triggered by the desire for nations of the world to unite in various spheres of development mainly the economy, education, employment, the environment and governance (Beck 45). Idealism In international relations and foreign policy, idealism is a political philosophy which entails the advancement of a particular ideology (political, social or economic) both at home and abroad, with a view of promoting and safeguarding the interests of citizens of a county and those of citizens in other countries in regard to that issue. Examples include the fight against poverty, HIV/AIDS and advocacy for democracy instead of dictatorship or authoritarianism as well as safeguarding of human rights.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on International Institutions’ Role in Prevention of War specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Liberalism This is the idea that nations of the world relate not only for political power and economic purposes but also for cultural purposes. With liberalism therefore, the relationship between states is characterised by a lot of cooperation in various aspects like in trade and cultural exchange. Liberalism also claims that nations which interact in trade and cultural exchange rarely make war and these acts as an incentive to international peace. Constructivism This is the augment that international relations are based on ideas but not on material things like wealth creation or cultural exchange. Countries which have similar ideologies are therefore more likely to relate or interact with each other than those which have different ideologies. According to construc tivists, the interaction between states is influenced by collective values, social identities and culture. The constructivist approach therefore does not see any anarchy between nations and also blames realism and liberalism for failing to predict the end of the cold war. International Law International law refers to the set of laws or principles which govern the relationships between sovereign states (Fichtelberg 41). It was initially formed to govern the manner in which nation states related to each other with a view of improving their relationships in regard to specific issues. International law initially took the form of treaties and agreements between states, which were either bilateral or multilateral. The treaties were on issues like trade, agriculture and other forms of cooperation between the signatories of the treaties. The world has been changing which has led to the emergence of a new international system whereby states interact more frequently than before. Globalization , terrorism and ethnic conflicts have been on the rise in the recent years (Scott 214). This has led to the adjustment of international law to take care of the issues in the new international system and how states treat their own citizens. One of the ways in which international law has been changed is in regard to the issue of human rights. International law initially did not interfere with internal affairs of sovereign states and how states treated their own citizens. But with the rising cases of atrocities committed by governments to their citizens, international law has been widened in scope to address the issue of crime against humanity based on the universal declaration of human rights, which makes it illegal for any government to violate the so called civil and political liberties of its citizens (Darraj 92).Advertising Looking for research paper on international relations? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The issue of environment has also made international law to be widened in scope to include environmental protection. This is mainly due to climate change which leads to global warming. Several treaties have been formed to address the issue of climate change. Examples include the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Kyoto protocol on climate change, the United Nations convention to combat desertification and the Copenhagen talks (Deke 76). Universal Declarations of Human Rights Every human being is endowed with certain inalienable rights and entitlements. These rights and entitlements exist as shared norms of human moralities and natural rights. The rights and entitlements underscore the importance of treating all human beings with dignity, fairness and equality irrespective of their cultural backgrounds. These rights and entitlements are supported by strong reasons and legal basis at national and international levels. Human rights ideas emerged after the Seco nd World War when the universal declaration of human rights was adopted by the General Assembly in 1948. Human rights laws to some extend remain credible as a reflection of a global commitment to human rights. Each state has the obligation to protect human rights for its citizens (Paul 8). Grapes of Wrath Quotes

Grapes of Wrath Quotes The Grapes of Wrath is a novel by Nobel-Prize winning author John Steinbeck that is considered a classic piece of American literature. Published in 1939, the plot centers around the Joads, a family of sharecroppers, who journey to California seeking a new life as they attempt to escape the devasting effects of the Oklahoma Dust Bowl and The Great Depression. Selected Quotes from The Grapes of Wrath Houses were shut tight, and cloth wedged around doors and windows, but the dust came in so thinly that it could not be seen in the air, and it settled like pollen on the chairs and tables, on the dishes. Before I knowed it, I was sayin out loud, The hell with it! There aint no sin and there aint no virtue. Theres just stuff people do. Its all part of the same thing.... I says, Whats this call, this sperit? An I says, Its love. I love people so much Im fit to bust, sometimes.... I figgered, Why do we got to hang it on God or Jesus? Maybe, I figgered, maybe its all men an all women we love; maybe thats the Holy Sperit-the human sperit-the whole shebang. Maybe all men got one big soul everbodys a part of. Now I sat there thinkin it, an all of a sudden- I knew it. I knew it so deep down that it was true, and I still know it. They breathe profits; they eat the interest on money. If they dont get it, they die the way you die without air, without side-meat. The bank is something more than men, I tell you. Its the monster. Men made it, but they cant control it. I got thinkin how we was holy when we was one thing, an mankin was holy when it was one thing. An it ony got unholy when one misable little fella got the bit in his teeth an run off his own way, kickin an draggin an fightin. Fella like that bust the holi-ness. But when theyre all workin together, not one fella for another fella, but one fella kind of harnessed to the whole shebang- thats right, thats holy. It aint that big. The whole United States aint that big. It aint that big. It aint big enough. There aint room enough for you an me, for your kind an my kind, for rich and poor together all in one country, for thieves and honest men. For hunger and fat. Man, unlike any other thing organic or inorganic in the universe, grows beyond his work, walks up the stairs of his concepts, emerges ahead of his accomplishments. Fear the time when the strikes stop while the great owners live- for every little beaten strike is proof that the step is being taken... fear the time when Manself will not suffer and die for a concept, for this one quality is the foundation of Manself, and this one quality is man, distinctive in the universe. Is a tractor bad? Is the power that turns the long furrows wrong? If this tractor were ours, it would be good- not mine, but ours. We could love that tractor then as we have loved this land when it was ours. But this tractor does two things- it turns the land and turns us off the land. There is little difference between this tractor and a tank. The people were driven, intimidated, hurt by both. We must think about this. Okie use ta mean you was from Oklahoma. Now it means youre a dirty son-of-a-bitch. Okie means youre scum. Dont mean nothing itself, its the way they say it. I know this... a man got to do what he got to do. Theys a time of change, an when that comes, dyin is a piece of all dyin, and bearin is a piece of all bearin, an bearin an dyin is two pieces of the same thing. An then things aint so lonely anymore. An then a hurt dont hurt so bad. And the great owners, who must lose their land in an upheaval, the great owners with access to history, with eyes to read history and to know the great fact: when property accumulates in too few hands it is taken away. And that companion fact: when a majority of the people are hungry and cold they will take by force what they need. And the little screaming fact that sounds through all history: repression works only to strengthen and knit the repressed. How can you frighten a man whose hunger is not only in his own cramped stomach but in the wretched bellies of his children? You cant scare him- he has known a fear beyond every other. Were Joads. We dont look up to nobody. Grampas grampa, he fit in the Revolution. We was farm people till the debt. And then- them people. They done somepin to us. Ever time they come seemed like they was a-whippin me- all of us. An in Needles, that police. He done somepin to me, made me feel mean. Made me feel ashamed. An now I aint ashamed. These folks is our folks- is our folks. An that manager, he come an set an drank coffee, an he says, Mrs. Joad this, an Mrs. Joad that- an How you getting on, Mrs. Joad? She stopped and sighed. Why, I feel like people again. The migrant people, scuttling for work, scrabbling to live, looked always for pleasure, dug for pleasure, manufactured pleasure, and they were hungry for amusement. In the souls of the people, the grapes of wrath are filling and growing heavy, growing heavy for the vintage. Says one time he went out in the wilderness to find his own soul, an he foun he didnt have no soul that was hisn. Says he foun he jus got a little piece of a great big soul. Says a wilderness aint no good, cause his little piece of a soul wasnt no good less it was with the rest, an was whole. Whenever theys a fight so hungry people can eat, Ill be there. Whenever theys a cop beatin up a guy, Ill be there... Ill be in the way guys yell when theyre mad an Ill be in the way kids laugh when theyre hungry an they know suppers ready. An when our folks eat the stuff they raise an live in the houses they build- why, Ill be there.

The Usefulness of Websites for Historical Research Essay

The Usefulness of Websites for Historical Research - Essay Example A website may be the work of an individual, a business, or any other type of organization for that matter, which is typically dedicated to some particular topic or purpose. Websites are extremely useful in the studying of various research topics. However when it comes to historical research, there are certain values and limitations of websites for studying this history. The aim of this paper is to examine and assess these values and limitations, in order to come to a clearer and more knowledgeable understanding on how accurate and useful websites truly are for studying history. By examining six websites in particular, we can base our results on how successful the average website is when used for studying history. Basing our historical research around the Civil War, the websites which will be used in this study will be as follows: By thoroughly examining these six websites, we can come to a critical assessment of how accessible and resourceful the average website is in historical research. This is what will be dissertated in the following. The immediate content of this website was professional and direct, with the home page offering separate corresponding timelines to choose from. Information such as: Civil War experience, Civil War timeline, Civil War battles, and Civil War people were also available to choose from on the home page; giving the visitor a vast array of options to choose from. In terms of visual presentation, it was accurately appropriate for the topic, and good design allowed for easy access through this site. There was in fact even a design labeled as the 'best graphic on site' in the 'Civil War Experience' page.1 Thinkquest offered a vast exhibition of useful information in regards to the Civil War, and even offered a 'Fun Fact of the day'; random factual occurrences which relate to the Civil War. The corresponding timelines offered accurate and incredibly informational timelines on the Civil War, and were significantly useful directional tools in terms of accessing around the website. In terms of what was negative about this site, or what more could have been done, the only true factor would be in regards to the actual design layout of the page. Although all the information was easily accessible, the visible attractiveness of it could certainly be updated and laid out more efficiently. However, as a website for allocating and using resourceful information on the Civil War, it can certainly be considered overall as positive. The Civil War Home Page This website was easily the most informational, graphically pleasing, and overall positive out of the six. The home page itself contained more educational and resourceful information that might even be expected; while still remaining to be pleasing to the eye. The layout and content of the site was done so in a way most certainly methodologically in order to allow visitors an easily accessible and highly information tour through the site. The immediate presentation of the website was not the only positive element; after selecting any of the numerous offered links to

The Difference between Sexual Practice and Identity Essay

The Difference between Sexual Practice and Identity - Essay Example This has forced these plants to bring international economic activities into effect. Another characteristic that helps maquiladoras enforce the globalization of economy is their main function, which is assembling key components into final products. These products are then to be exported into foreign markets. Maquiladoras also encourage globalization of economy by widely negating capital investment, production services and upper management without the exaction of duties (global economy and trade thrive most in areas where duties and tariffs are either negated or minimized). How Maquiladoras affect women around the world Corey Mattson, Marie Ayer and Daniela Mijal Gerson maintain that maquiladoras have greatly affected women globally, and unfortunately, in a negative manner. This, they do by corroborating information that MADRE, MUIXIL, Barcenas Women’s Working Committee and the Information Women’s Human Rights Clinic has provided. Mattson, Ayer and Gerson point out that maquiladoras have promoted femicide, political discrimination and violence against women, and outright violations of human rights in the maquilas. Mattson, Ayer and Gerson maintain that in Guatemala, there are hundreds of cases of femicide that have materialized over a few years. These scholars point out that while men are killed in greater numbers, what makes women’s case unique is that their killing is more deliberate, calculated, despite ICCPR’s articles 2, 3, 6, 7, 12, 16, 17, 19, 26 and 27 having proscribed such killings. Even after having passed domestic legislation to curtail the negative development, the government of Guatemala has not really been able to stop this vice (485). Mattson, Ayer and Gerson continue that femicide can be traced as far back as 36 years ago when the country slipped into internal conflict that has seen women being killed and raped as a way of destroying the enemy family structure, the community or even the whole country. They cite the Co mmission for Historical Clarification (CEH) to state that by 1994 alone, 9,411 women have been lost to gender based violence in the wake of the conflict. At the center of this conflict is the fight over state resources, including maquiladoras. That the government has a stake in the war is a matter that is clearly exemplified by the rampant impunity in Guatemala. From 2005 to 2007, only a meager 2% of 2,000 cases of femicide were prosecuted to their conclusive end. In the movie Maquilapolis, the mistreatment of women is equally bizarre within the confines of maquiladoras factories. Most employees are women who are paid less and work for long office hours. These women are for instance not allowed to visit washrooms or engage in communication, in order to keep production optimal. As a result, reports of nose bleeding and other conditions that are symptomatic of kidney problems remain popular among these female workers in maquiladoras. Q. 5. The Difference between Sexual Practice and Id entity Identity greatly affects sexual practices. This is because, cultural settings greatly molds human behavior, by the virtue of its moral power. Instead, morality has its essence seen in the prescription of behavior either being right or wrong, ethical or unethical, noble or ignoble. This therefore means that sexual and nonsexual practices are thoroughly defined as only being able to be carried within the parameters of the societal values and

Active Perception Essay Example for Free

Active Perception Essay The Wikipedia article on perception defined passive perception theory which states that perception is a phenomenon that results from a sequence of events. First, the sensory information is taken in which the senses process and interpret. After processing the information, a response to the information is generated. The best way to illustrate this theory is by observing how an old computer works. Data are fed on to the computer which it processes and interprets after which, a response to the data is produced. However, recent studies show that perception does not occur in such a simple, linear manner. Rather, the information, the input or senses, and the description or interpretation of the information interact with one another and form a dynamic relationship. The Wikepedia article on perception refers to this occurrence as active perception. In addition, Freeman (78) claimed in his article that perception is a physiological phenomenon which is more complex than it appears. Previous studies reported that the cerebral cortex is responsible for the analysis of the sensory information. However, recent studies revealed that the brain does more than merely analyzing sensory information by extracting its features. The process of perception involves the past experience of an individual which he or she relates to the sensory message. This stimulus (sensory information) and its particular meaning to an individual are expected to be identified based on his or her previous experiences. Millions of neurons are simultaneously at work during perception which Freeman referred to as the brain of chaos. The brain of chaos is complex behavior of neurons that appears to be random but possesses some hidden order in actuality. Various neurons abruptly and simultaneously shift â€Å"from one complex activity pattern to another in response to the smallest of inputs† (Freeman 78). Freeman (78) speculated that the brain of chaos makes perception possible. This could explain why some people instantly recognize the distinct smell dental clinics and dislike it due to their terrible experience in a dental clinic in the past. In the same way, the underlying theory on active perception could explain why people can recognize a famous actor, the aroma of their favorite food, and a close friend’s voice at once (Freeman 78). All activities in one’s life require perception. It is one of the bases of behavior, beliefs, values, attitudes, and preferences. Perception is also important in decision-making and responding to external events. When shopping, for instance, the items that the buyer purchased (and those that he or she rejected) are a reflection of his or her perception on the items’ price, quality, function, and overall attractiveness. Hence, understanding perception works is very important. By understanding the underlying processes involved in perception, how the behavior, beliefs, values, attitudes, and preferences of an individual are formed would be determined. The cognitive and affective processes involved in decision-making and responding to external events would also be understood by conducting research on perception. Knowing the reason why people behave or think in a certain way would greatly contribute to understanding others. Certainly, when people understand one another, personal relationships would improve, while the activities that directly involve people such as a psychological therapy or a marketing approach would be more effectively implemented. In conclusion, perception is a complex process which is not limited to a passive process of obtaining sensory information. Rather, it is a process that involves past experience and a dynamic relationship between the information, the input or senses, and the description of the information. It was also discovered that perception is a complex brain activity in contrast to previous findings which state that perception occurs at the cerebral cortex. By understanding the process and concept of perception, people would be able to learn how behavior, beliefs, attitudes, preferences, decision-making, and response to external events are formed. The Power is in the People :: essays papers

The Power is in the People Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. (The United States Constitution: The First Amendment). By the action taken on December 12, 1791 (when the Bill of Rights was adopted), the United States of America granted its people a power that would prove extremely potent one-hundred and twenty-nine years later. During the era of Prohibition (1920-1933), people took whatever action necessary to get their way, and did so through the rights afforded to them in the First Amendment. Individuals in favor of Prohibition, seeing the benefits of the institution, worked together to sustain it. Those against Prohibition, feeling a violation of their rights, acted just as intensely, if not even more so, to stop the movement. The government, ignoring the voice of the people, was primarily concerned with keeping Prohibition alive. However, the right to individual voice, a principle upon which the United States was founded, made it impossible for an institution such as Prohibition to exist successfully. In the years prior to and during Prohibition, many people did everything within their power to keep the nation free of alcohol. Numerous committees were formed for the purpose of pursuing the enactment and continuation of Prohibition. Church and religion also played a large part in the fight to keep the nation â€Å"dry†. Some individuals even entered politics and took office in the government in an effort to be heard. People made an united effort to reveal the virtues of Prohibition to the nation. The Anti-Saloon League of America was founded in 1893 at Oberlin, Ohio. Throughout Prohibition, its members went from town to town speaking out against saloons and alcohol (Merz 8). On January 16, 1920, they also declared, â€Å"it is here at last - dry America’s first birthday† (Kobler 11). Women established a group of their own as well. In 1874, Protestant women formed the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. They, like the Anti-Saloon League of America, cited the advantages of Prohibition (Kobler 10). As a whole, groups such as these utilized their First Amendment rights to the fullest to preach what they believed.

Come on, Christina. Everybodys doing it. Its fine! Christina knew that it was not right, but everyone was doing it. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Conformity in Fahrenheit 451" essay for you Create order Whats the problem with it? This is a common issue that most everybody will be faced with. Do I give in or do I stand up for what I believe in? This is the same problem that Guy Montag faces. Does he read the books that he thinks will give him truth and knowledge, which is against the law, or does he not in fear that he would be caught? This common issue is conformity, or a type of social influence involving change in belief or behavior in order to fit in with a group in response to real (involving the physical presence of others) or imagined (involving the pressure of social norms/expectations) group pressure (McLeod). Ray Bradbury develops the theme of In a battle between doing what is right and conforming to society, both options cause actions that can have a negative result, by having Montag go through a big decision about whether to commit to books. In the beginning of the novel, the theme is introduced through Clarisse, who sparks the conflict in Montag in which he can choose books or society. We can immediately sense the pressure of conformity mounting upon Montag, as shown on page 21, where it says, He felt his body divide itself into a hotness and a coldness, a softness and a hardness, a trembling and a not trembling, the two halves grinding one upon the other (Bradbury 21). He is wrestling with the pressures of being a member of society and being active in it, but at the same time, his gut instinct is telling him that something is messed up in the world that they live in (Fahrenheit 451 Clarisse McClellan Quotes). He must decide whether to lead a life with books, which is illegal and could get him arrested and his house burnt, or to just live as society tells him to (to conform). The theme is refined by him wrestling with his options as the novel progresses. If he chooses to go along with society, he knows he will live an unhappy and unsatisfied life. In Part II, Montag tells Faber, We have everything we need to be happy, but we arent happy. Somethings missing (Bradbury 78). This shows how if he went back to society, then he, like everyone around him, wouldnt be happy. He knows that his society is missing something, and he would later learn from Faber that it is the information contained in books. Also, if he went back, he would probably continue to have a stressed relationship with his wife. The theme is fully developed by the end by Montag choosing the books over everything else and him feeling the effects of his decision. If Montag followed his heart and his books, then his house could be burned (it in fact is) and he could be arrested. He ultimately decides to follow this path, with the guidance of Faber. However, it still ends poorly for him as Mildred, his wife, calls an alarm on him. He is forced to burn his house, and he is arrested. He resists the arrest, and in a rage of fury he murders Beatty. Montag now must go on the run as a fugitive, all because he wanted to save his books and deviate from the normal standard. Bradbury writes, But he was still crying and that had to be finished. He hadnt wanted to kill anyone, not even Beatty. Im sorry, Im sorry, oh God, sorry (116). It is hard to argue that being a fugitive and losing everything is a positive thing, and Montag has lost everything because he fought for what he believed in. So, Christina, dont feel like there is one perfect option. There are negatives to going with the flow and standing out, but there are also positives to both. While the effects of both might not be on the same scale as Montags, it is important to always weigh your options. There is nothing that is not all white or all black. Rather, it is a shade of grey.
